COATINGS INDUSTRY

The coatings industry continues to represent one of the largest raw material markets of all the industrial sectors. Based on the three raw material legs of pigments, solvent/water, and additives, the industry encompasses end use requirements from decorative to protective, from freezing to furnace, and from hours to decades.

The Western U.S. coatings industry represents all end use segments with the exception of top coat automotive OEM. This includes DIY architectural, contractor architectural, heavy duty industrial maintenance, marine, general industrial, powder, automotive OEM parts and after market, and traffic marking.

The West Coast market contains the headquarters of several multi-state/multi-national companies; some of the nation's largest regional architectural and industrial firms; branch plants of the major multi-national companies; a cross section of small, local coatings companies; and a constant component of start-up firms in both the architectural and industrial markets.

For the past twenty years, the West Coast has led the development of lower VOC coatings, many of which have been adopted and will continue to be adopted by other parts of North America. It is this trend, along with the trend toward more benign raw materials in general, that will continue to drive the R&D efforts and subsequently the raw material purchasing of the West Coast coatings companies.
